We’re recruiting two Community Kitchen Trainees!

Sussex Surplus is a community embedded social enterprise which rescues and processes food at risk of going to waste, turning it into tasty meals and long-life products. We aim to demonstrate the solution to food waste is inclusive and delicious. A key aspect of our mission is creating paid entry-level positions for young neurodiverse people aged 18-24.  

We are looking for two enthusiastic and determined trainees to join our team on a 12 week traineeship based in our community kitchen in East Brighton. Training will be provided so no prior experience is necessary, however we are looking for people with a passion for food and a desire to help others in the community. We will work with the successful candidates to arrange a work pattern that is mutually convenient and manageable. 

 

Scope of job 

  • Working alongside the team to complete daily kitchen tasks, including making products with surplus produce. Washing, chopping, cooking, portioning and packing food in our community kitchen in the Bristol Estate Community Room, East Brighton  

  • Learning how a community kitchen operates and applying safe and hygienic working practices 

  • Serving food to the community 2 times a week. We will provide training in customer service

  • Occasional visits to local farms to glean (pick) fresh fruit and veg at risk of going to waste 

  • Some independent study at home or in the workplace (as preferred)  

 

Who we are looking for 

The success candidate will: 

  • Have an interest in and ethusiasm for cookery and food

  • Have an interest in contributing to making healthy, affordable, culturally appropriate and sustainable food more accessible in the local community 

  • Have good communication and teamwork abilities 

  • Be enthusiastic, hardworking and keen to learn. Physically fit and able to work both in a kitchen and occasionally outdoors 

  • Have an existing connection to East Brighton 
     

Eligibility

  1. You must be aged 18-24 years old 

  2. You must be legally entitled to work in the UK

Wage £12 / hour (Real Living Wage) 

Contract length 12 weeks, 10 hours per week
